Chinaese drone maker SZ DJI Technology Co. has said it will suspend all business activities in Russia and Ukraine, amidst concerns that both sides were using DJI drones in the conflict.
The use of DJI drones in the Ukraine war came after Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov said in a Twitter post last month that Russian troops are using DJI products to navigate their missiles to kill "civilians."
DJI asserted it does not market or sell its products for military use.
DJI does not provide after-sales services for products that have been identified as being used for military purposes.
DJI has unequivocally opposed attempts to attach weapons to our products.
DJI has refused to customize or enable modifications that would enable our products for military use.
In addition, it said that its distributors, resellers, and other business agree not to sell DJI products to customers who clearly plan to use them for military purposes, or help modify our products for military use, and they understand we will terminate our business relationship with them if they cannot adhere to this commitment.
Inspite of the company's claims of strictly civilian use of its drones, the US military was using DJI drones as small battlefied support drones but gave it up under President Trump's policy of not using Chinese products by U.S. forces.
The U.S. then commenced its own S-UAS (Small-Unmanned Air System) program giving a number of contracts to local companies.
