Russian Navy received its most potent nuclear powered submarine ever, the Belgorod which is intended to carry the Poseidon nuclear torpedo, an underwater weapon that can trigger a radio-active Tusnami.
The Sevmash Production Association handed over the Belgorod 'special-purpose' submarine to the Russian Navy, the company's press service reported on Friday.
"Today, July 8, 2022, at the largest shipbuilding enterprise in Russia - JSC PO Sevmash - a solemn ceremony was held to sign the acceptance certificate and transfer the Belgorod research submarine to the Navy," the release said.
"The Belgorod submarine opens up new opportunities for Russia in carrying out various studies, allows conducting diverse scientific expeditions and rescue operations in the most remote areas of the World Ocean," Nikolay Evmenov , Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy was quoted as saying in the release.
Though touted as a 'research submarine,' the Belgorod nuclear submarine of project 09852 and the Khabarovsk of project 09851 will become carriers of Poseidon unmanned attack underwater systems, Interax reported.

The Poseidon underwater drone is nuclear powered and carrying a 2-megaton nuclear weapon which can throw up a 500 meters of radio-active tsunami when exploded underwater. In February 2019, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the Poseidon had successfully passed sea trials.
"The presence of this weapon will allow the Navy to solve a wide range of tasks in the far sea zone, in waters close to enemy territory," Vladimir Korolev, then Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, said in 2018 as quoted by Interfax.
According to Russian and Western media, the one meter diameter Poseidon is a true doomsday weapon in that it can lie on the seabed virtually undetected and when launched cannot be intercepted due to the depth it can travel in and its speed which is said to be 100 knots.
The Belgorod submarine was launched in April 2019. In July 2020, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that work on creating an ocean system (integrating the Belgorod) with the Poseidon nuclear underwater drone was being completed.
“Currently, work is being successfully completed on the creation of modern weapons systems for the Navy: an underwater complex equipped with Poseidon unmanned vehicles and the Zirkon hypersonic missile system,” the Russian Defense Ministry reported in 2021.
