South Korea’s F-4E Fighter Crashes, Pilots Safe
ROKAF F-4 Phantom II jet

A Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) F-4E fighter jet crashed in the Yellow Sea om Friday.

The two pilots onboard the aircraft managed to eject before the accident, that happened around 12.20pm local time. The jet was returning to the Suwon air base in the vicinity of capital Seoul.

The exact cause of the incident is currently under investigation, the Air Force said.

The F-4E flown by the ROKAF is one of many variants of the twinjet, all-weather F-4 Phantom II. It first flew on May 27, 1958, and entered service in 1961 as the U.S. Navy’s fastest, highest flying and longest-range fighter.

ROAK is currently working on a plan to decommission its aging F-4 fleet.
