Belarusian Su-30 aircraft have been configured to carry nuclear weapons, President Alexander Lukashenko told told local journalists on Friday.
"They must realize that no helicopters or airplanes will save them, should they opt for an escalation," the BelTA news agency quotes Lukashenko as saying.
"Together with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, we stated in St. Petersburg some time ago that we would reconfigure Belarus’ Sukhoi aircraft to nuclear weapons delivery. Do you think that we were just wagging our tongues? Everything is ready!" Lukashenko said.
In June, Lukashenko addressed Putin with a proposal for taking proportionate countermeasures against Western actions and reconfiguring Belarusian planes to enable them to carry nuclear warheads.
Aleksandr Lukashenko had said on June 25: “We are very concerned about training flights of USA and NATO aircraft, which are training to carry nuclear warheads. It is very stress-inducing for us. This is why I ask you to consider a tit-for-tat response to these things. Without overdoing it."
Lukashenko did not specify what type of nuclear warheads would ride on the warplanes or how Belaurs acquired the nuclear tipped missiles or bombs.
Belarus is Russia's steadfast ally in the war against Ukraine. It is reported that its bases are being used by the Russian Air Force to launch strikes against Ukraine.
Days after Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, President Putin had activated Russia's nuclear deterrance.
