Russia conducted a nuclear strategic deterrence drill for troops firing test missiles from land, sea and air platforms amidst reports that Moscow was planning to release a 'dirty' bomb or a small nuclear weapon in Ukraine.
Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, reported to the President on the training of the Yars mobile ground-based missile system, the Tula nuclear submarine of the Northern Fleet, and two Tu-95MS long-range strategic missile carriers.
“Under your leadership, training is being carried out, during which the task of delivering a massive nuclear strike in response to an enemy nuclear strike will be worked out,” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Putin.
"The tasks envisaged during the training of the strategic deterrence forces have been completed in full, all missiles have reached their targets, confirming the specified characteristics," the Kremlin website said in a statement.
On Wednesday, the Kura test site in Kamchatka launched the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk state test cosmodrome and the Sineva ballistic missile from the Barents Sea. Long-range aircraft Tu-95MS, which launched cruise missiles, were also involved in the implementation of tasks.
"During the event, the level of preparedness of the military command and control bodies and the skills of the leadership and operational staff in organizing command and control of the troops were checked," the Kremlin press service said.
The US has already warned Russia of 'consequenses' if it resorted to the use of nuclear weapons to make up for its losses in Ukraine. The US has moved F-21 fighter bombers to Europe and alerted its forces in the NATO region.
The missiles Russia tested today have the capability to hit targets across the globe.
