Embraer and Lockheed Martin are trying to sell multi-mission tactical air transport aircraft, C-390 Millennium and C-130J, to the Indian Air Force.
The IAF issued a Request for Information (RFI) in December to acquire a medium transport aircraft (MTA) which has the capability of lifting 18-30 tones. These new aircraft will go on to replace the service’s existing AN-32 and Avro fleet.
Companies vying for the deal should submit their bids before March 31, 2023.
A C-390 aircraft was part of Embraer’s static display at the Aero India 2023 in Bengaluru.
“We are proud to bring Embraer’s iconic C-390 Millennium to India for our guests to experience the true capabilities of this 21st-century military multi-mission aircraft,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President & CEO, Embraer Defense & Security. “India is a key market for Embraer, and we are keen to establish partnerships in the country that can further boost India’s defense industries and capabilities. We look forward to engaging with India’s defense & aerospace ecosystem at this event.”
Delivery of the first aircraft should be transferred to the IAF within 36 months of signing the contract, as per RFI specifications.
The vendors are expected to share details about the overall time frame of production; delivery schedule with stage wise breakup of the entire project is expected to be submitted post conclusion of contract.
The Indian air force (IAF) has requested a cost breakdown for a production run of 40, 60 and 80 aircraft. The selected type will need to be produced under license in India.
India already has 12 C-130J transport planes. Last week, Lockheed Martin said it will launch a Heavy Maintenance Repair Center in India. This facility –built to perform maintenance and repair of C-130Js – will be the first of its kind in Asia and the third in the world after the U.S. and Canada.
