Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is buying 100 F404-GE-102 engines for Hurjet jet trainer and light attack aircraft.

Dr. Temel Kotil, TAI General Manager, said the company purchased General Electric-made engines for the Turkish jet, as per local media.

Hurjet carried out its first engine start test in January.

The ordered GE engines are expected to be produced in Eskişehir under license by Tusaş Engine Industries (TEI).

During the Paris Air Show 2023, TEI and GE signed a Maintenance, Repair and Renovation (MRO) agreement for the F110 Turbofan Engine. A similar agreement is likely to be signed for the F404.

The aircraft will be equipped with an advanced mission computer in its modern cockpit. It will be supplied with superior radar and sensitive attack systems, and with air and ground communication capabilities.

The Hürjet will be 13.4m long with a wingspan of 11m and will provide environmental security in offensive operations. Its maximum altitude is set at 45,000 feet (14km), along with its 3,000kg payload and a maximum speed of Mach 1.2.

This jet will replace Turley’s T-38 trainer aircraft fleet – consisting of 70 aircraft.

Hurjet will replace Turkey’s T-38 and F-5 aircraft.
