General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) will create propulsion technology designs to power submarines and other undersea vehicles under Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Advanced Propulsor, Experimental (APEX) program.

The company has won a contract from General Dynamics Applied Physical Sciences to perform propulsion system design, to provide modeling, technical evaluation, and analysis.

The APEX program is intended to develop and demonstrate a new generation of propulsion technology designs to power submarines and other undersea vehicles, GA-EMS said in a statement.

Phase 1 of the APEX program will last 24 months. General Dynamics Applied Physical Sciences is the prime contractor. GA-EMS will perform propulsion system design, engineering and analysis in its Boston, MA facility, and any required manufacturing and testing in its Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Tupelo, MS.
