Modernization of Chilean Leopard 2A4CHL battle tanks will be carried out by Turkey’s Aselsan and a local company Famae.
Chile bought nearly 150 Leopard 2A4s in the mid-2000s. The CHL version features new sights and fire control system, while the main point of modernization is the Rhl 120/L55 cannon, which is now used in the newer version of the Leopard 2A6 tank. The lengthened gun has improved range and armor-piercing performance.
The two companies signed an agreement to undertake Leopard modernization work on July 14. It involves technology transfer, which will allow the Chilean company to maintain its armored vehicle fleet in the future.
While there is no official information on the contract’s value, on July 17, Aselsan said it finalized a $123,500,000 contract with an international customer.
Aselsan and Famae are expected to also upgrade Marder 1A3 combat vehicles operated by the Chilean Army.
