The prototype of the Russian wide-body long-range aircraft, Il-96-400M, manufactured at the VASO branch of Il PJSC, a part of Rostec's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), has taken to the skies for the first time.
During its inaugural flight, the aircraft underwent comprehensive testing to evaluate its stability, controllability, systems' operability, power plant performance, and radio equipment for landing. The test program proceeded as usual, confirming the reliable operation of Russian systems and equipment, the majority of which were produced by Rostec State Corporation enterprises.
The flight reached altitudes of up to 2000 meters, speeds of up to 390 km/h, and lasted 26 minutes.
““The first and successful flight of the modernized Il-96-400M is a demonstration of the highest level of competence of domestic design bureaus and aircraft factories. The aircraft not only retained the high performance of the Il-96-300, but also received new operational and transport capabilities. Due to new modern flight navigation and radio communications equipment using Russian components, flight safety and reliability are increased, and solutions are used in the aerodynamic layout, structures and systems of the aircraft to ensure operational efficiency. In the future, the new vessel will allow us to develop and improve our competencies in creating wide-body long-haul aircraft,” said Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and Minister of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov.
Sergei Chemezov, Director General of the Rostec State Corporation, underscored the significance of the Il-96-400M program initiated by the President of Russia, highlighting the aircraft's potential for air cargo transportation and access to various regions in the country. The Il-96-400M boasts a maximum flight range of 8100 kilometers in a two-class passenger configuration.
This modernized version of the Il-96-300 features a lengthened fuselage by 9.35 meters, more powerful PS-90A1 engines, and the capacity to accommodate up to 370 passengers. It received new operational and transport capabilities through the modernization of its flight, navigation, and radio communication equipment to meet the current and future requirements of Russian and international aviation regulators.
Yuri Slyusar, General Director of PJSC UAC, affirmed that the Il-96-400M would expand the UAC's lineup of civil aircraft, offering wide-body airliners for various routes throughout the country and replacing foreign analogues. The aircraft can be configured with cargo and various passenger classes, equipped with a modern infotainment system, and features improved navigation systems to enhance flight safety and simplify landing approaches.
