The Finnish Navy's Hamina-Class vessels' modernization and Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) project have successfully received final approval.
The Finnish Defence Forces and Patria inked a contract in 2018 for the modernization and mid-life upgrade of four vessels, with Patria serving as the prime contractor, designer, and lead system integrator throughout the project.
The modernization initiative aimed to provide enhanced capabilities for the Finnish Navy to counter maritime threats, repel attacks at sea, protect sea lines of communication, and monitor and secure territorial integrity.
The upgraded vessels now feature a new torpedo and surface-to-surface missile system, along with improvements to the surface-to-air missile system, enabling impact to the air, surface, and underwater domains. As part of the new capabilities, Patria introduced a new Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV)-based training target system, facilitating anti-submarine warfare training.
Patria successfully delivered the first vessel, Tornio, to the Finnish Navy in 2020, and the fourth and final modernized vessel, Pori, in 2022. Following the deliveries, sea acceptance tests were conducted for the vessels.
Alongside the future Pohjanmaa-Class corvettes, the Hamina-Class vessels will form the core of the Finnish Navy's naval operational capability in the 2030s.
