Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has initiated the technical design development for the IL-212 military transport aircraft, utilizing the powerful PD-8 engine borrowed from the SJ-100 aircraft.

Defense minister Sergei Shoigu was briefed on the project during a teleconference with the leadership of the Russian Armed Forces at the National Centre for State Defence Control.

The IL-212 aims to replace the aging An-26 and An-72 fleets, featuring a unique design with PD-8 twin turbofan engines mounted atop the wings, providing a higher thrust-to-weight ratio than similar aircraft. The aircraft is expected to have enhanced payload capacity, extended range, improved ease of refueling and maintenance, and the capability to operate on unpaved and unequipped runways, as well as in Arctic latitudes.

The IL-212 prototype is projected to be manufactured by the conclusion of 2026.

Following this development, Shoigu has suggested discussing the United Engine Corporation's (UEC) fulfillment of its mission, specifically in supplying and repairing engines for tactical, long-range, and army aviation.

Plans to develop a new plane based on the IL-112B turboprop aircraft was first revealed in October 2023. The IL-212 will feature twin-turbojet PD-8 engines, replacing the TV7-117ST-02 engines, while retaining the predecessor's flight equipment, avionics, and general fuselage design. Significant redesigns are planned for the wing, landing gear, fuel, and hydraulic systems.

The Il-212 will be able to be used from unprepared runways, with reduced take-off and run lengths. The thrust-to-weight ratio is expected to increase, thanks to the installation of promising PD-8 turbofan engines with increased thrust to 7000 kgf. The new aircraft can be used for various purposes, including transporting air assault groups or serving as a light AWACS aircraft.

PD-8 engine

The PD-8 engine is a high-thrust turbofan engine developed by Aviadvigatel. It features a two-shaft design comprising a single-stage fan, a 14-stage compressor, and a single-stage turbine. It is equipped with a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. The engine has a thrust rating of 78 kN (17,500 lb). Developed as a replacement for the SaM-146 engine on the Sukhoi Superjet 100, the PD-8 is currently undergoing flight testing.
