Indonesia has chosen Naval Group and PT PAL by commissioning the construction of two Scorpène Evolved Full Lithium-Ion battery (LiB) submarines.

The decision, made on March 28, aligns with the Defence Cooperation Agreement signed between France and Indonesia in August 2021, Naval Group confirmed in a statement April 2.

Naval Group and PT PAL formalized their collaboration through a Strategic Partnership Agreement in February 2022. Under the agreement, the two companies will work together to deliver the Scorpène Evolved submarines, which will be constructed at PT PAL's shipyard in Indonesia.

The Scorpène Evolved submarines are designed for multipurpose operations, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, special operations, and intelligence gathering. With a crew capacity of 31 members, the submarines feature advanced technology such as the SUBTICS combat management system.

Key specifications of the Scorpène Evolved submarines include a surfaced displacement of 1,600 to 2,000 tons, a submerged speed exceeding 20 knots, and a diving depth of over 300 meters. The submarines boast an autonomy exceeding 78 days on an 80-day mission and can remain submerged for more than 12 days.

The adoption of full lithium-ion technology in the energy system allows for higher energy efficiency, reduced charging time, and increased tactical mobility regardless of the state of charge.
