The Pentagon today awarded Lockheed Martin $861 million to produce High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and provide supporting services.
The work is estimated to be completed by May 31, 2026.
As of January 2024, the U.S. has donated 39 HIMARS to Ukraine. These wheeled rocket-launchers fire GPS-guided 227-millimeter M30/31 rockets as far as 57 miles, making them some of Ukraine’s most effective artillery systems.
In a press release in February, Lockheed Martin stated it is accelerating the production of high-demand systems, such as HIMARS, Javelin, GMLRS, PAC-3, and more.
HIMARS production capacity has already increased from 48 per year to 60 per year and is on track to reach 96 per year by the end of 2024. To meet this demand, the company has expanded its tooling and optimized the space within its factory footprint. Lockheed Martin is also collaborating with its long lead supply chain to increase production and has allocated funds to reduce manufacturing lead times, the company reported.
