PZL-Świdnik, a subsidiary of Leonardo, has launched the production line for the AW149 helicopters designated for the Polish Armed Forces on June 4. Initially, AW149 production took place in Vergiate, Italy, where Polish workers underwent on-the-job training to ensure adherence to delivery schedules. This collaborative effort facilitated the handover of helicopters within 15 months of contract signing. The majority of AW149 helicopters for the Polish Armed Forces will now be manufactured in Poland, a significant milestone for the nation's defense industry.

The contract for 32 AW149s was signed between Leonardo and the Polish defense ministry in Świdnik in 2022. It encompasses not only the production of helicopters but also the integration of systems, armament customization, future upgrades, and comprehensive technical support throughout the lifespan of the Polish AW149 fleet. Local production will grant Poland a domestic logistics base and technical facilities in close proximity to the Polish Land Forces, enhancing operational efficiency and support capabilities.
