Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr for the delivery of an additional 1,515 logistic vehicles, including 265 protected swap-body systems.
This order, part of the framework contract for swap-body systems (WLS) signed in June 2020, is largely financed by the Bundeswehr's special fund. Alongside the vehicles, the Bundeswehr’s procurement agency, BAAINBw, has ordered 500 swap-body platforms and 500 tarpaulin/roof bow setups. The total value of this call-off exceeds €920 million gross. The vehicles will be delivered starting in the second half of 2024, with completion expected by mid-November 2024.
Since the framework contract was established in June 2020, 1,008 trucks have already been delivered, with this latest call-off marking another step towards the contract's potential delivery of up to 4,000 trucks by 2027. These vehicles are part of Rheinmetall’s HX family, known for their military-specific design and mobility.
The swap-body trucks will be equipped with Hiab's hook-loader, enabling them to lift and set down swap-body carriers in various terrains without additional handling equipment. Alternatively, these vehicles can transport a swap-body platform or a container using a standardized 20-foot ISO interface.
A notable feature of this delivery is that a large portion of the swap-body trucks will include armoured cabs, enhancing crew survivability and tactical flexibility. These vehicles will primarily be used to supply combat formations with essential bulk consumables such as ammunition, fuel, and water.
