The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag released funds on Wednesday for the development of a joint German-Norwegian project aimed at creating the Super Sonic Strike Missile (3 SM) "Tyrfing".

The project seeks to bolster maritime defense capabilities with advanced target engagement capabilities both at sea and on land. The Super Sonic Strike Missile will prioritize supersonic speed, enhanced mission control systems, and all-weather operational capability. Key features include in-flight controllability, modern seeker technology for precise target acquisition, and a variable-effect warhead to minimize collateral damage near targets.

Norway's Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace has been appointed as the primary contractor, supported by significant involvement from German industry partners. In November 2023, the partners officially began development of the next-generation strike missile. In May, Kongsberg, Diehl Defence, and MBDA Deutschland entered into an agreement to collaborate on the missile's development.

This joint effort positions Norway as the lead developer for the supersonic guided missile, with funding allocated from the Bundeswehr's special fund until 2027, transitioning to the defense budget from 2028 onwards. The development phase is expected to conclude in the early 2030s.

Additionally, both nations are concurrently involved in the construction of Class 212CD submarines led by Germany, with plans to deploy six submarines across their navies.
