The Greek Parliamentary Armaments Commission has accepted a proposal to purchase 20 F-35A Lightning II fighter jets and to evaluate participation in the Constellation-type frigate construction program.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias presented these proposals to the Commission.

According to the Greek State Agency AMNA, Dendias argued that the F-35 aircraft would enhance the country's deterrent power. He also stated that participating in the Constellation-type frigate construction program would strengthen the Hellenic Navy.

On January 27, 2024, the United States approved the sale of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets to Turkey and F-35A Lightning II fighter jets to Greece. The US-approved sale for Greece includes 40 F-35A fighter jets and additional systems, with a budget of $8.6 billion. These jets will replace the F-4 and Mirage-2000 aircraft in the Greek Air Force inventory.

The Constellation-class frigates are modern warships developed for the U.S. Navy by Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM), derived from the Italian FREMM frigates. Construction is ongoing for the first ship in the class, USS Constellation (FFG-62). These frigates are 151 meters long, 19.8 meters wide, with a draft of 7.3 meters and a displacement of 7,300 tons. They feature a CODLAG propulsion system that combines diesel electric and gas turbines, allowing speeds of over 28 knots and accommodating a crew of 200.

The Constellation-class frigates will be equipped with a 32-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launch System, capable of firing various missiles such as ESSM, SM-2, and SM-6. They will also have a 57mm Mk 110 Mod 0 gun and the ability to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Dendias' proposal for the F-35 and Constellation-type frigates was accepted by a majority vote in the Commission.
