South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) convened the first mass production commencement meeting for the KF-21, South Korea's first domestically developed fighter jet, on July 10.
The meeting took place at the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) Development Center in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do.
The purpose of the meeting was to ensure the timely delivery of the KF-21 to the Air Force. Discussions began with the presentation of the production plan for the aircraft fuselage, engine, and active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, along with the overall business plan. The agenda also covered detailed tasks such as work process management, shape and quality management, parts discontinuation management, and cooperation with related organizations.
During the event, KAI commemorated the start of the assembly of the first mass-produced aircraft and introduced advanced domestic automation equipment. This automation process aims to enhance assembly accuracy, maximize production efficiency, and reduce production time. These advancements are also expected to boost productivity for future exports alongside meeting military delivery schedules.
DAPA approved the 'KF-21 Initial Mass Production Plan' at the 160th Defense Acquisition Program Promotion Committee on March 22, 2024. Subsequently, mass production contracts were signed on June 25 with Korea Aerospace Industries, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Systems for the aircraft, engines, and AESA radars. The initial mass production contract, covering the period from 2024 to 2027, is valued at approximately KRW 2.632 trillion ($1.9 billion).
The first mass-produced KF-21 is scheduled for delivery to the Air Force and expected to enter service by the end of 2026.
