The Pentagon has announced a contract valued at nearly $2.1 billion for the low-rate initial production of the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense System (LTAMDS).

Fiscal 2024 Foreign Military Sales (Poland) and research, development, test, and evaluation, Army funds amounting to $816 million were obligated at the time of the award, the Pentagon said in an official statement.

The work is expected to be completed by November 30, 2028.

LTAMDS is the U.S. Army's next-gen air and missile defense radar, offering enhanced performance against various threats using Gallium Nitride technology.

In March 2024, Raytheon's LTAMDS radar completed its fourth live-fire test, demonstrating its capabilities to military leaders from seven nations. The 360-degree radar tracked a cruise missile surrogate and guided a PAC-3 MSE missile to intercept.

LTAMDS has met test objectives, achieving milestones in 2023, including live fires against air-breathing and ballistic missile threats. Six radars are undergoing full sector integration and testing, with rigorous testing to continue in 2024 ahead of fielding a full sector capability by year's end.
