Swedish MoD Increasing Black Hawk Helicopter Range by 50% with Additional Fuel Tank

Sweden is currently engaged in a project to enhance the range of its Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, officially known as Helicopter 16 in the Swedish Armed Forces, by 50%.

This effort involves modifying all Helicopter 16 units to accommodate an additional fuel tank that can be mounted in the cabin. The tank holds approximately 750 liters, thereby extending flight time by about 50%.

The modification process, which began in autumn 2023, is conducted in Sweden with the assistance of personnel from the American army. The work is projected to be completed by the end of 2024.

According to Per Johnsson, technical director of Helicopter 16, the project would not have been possible without the effective collaboration between the Air Staff, the Helicopter Flotilla, the Defense Materiel Administration (FMV), and the American supplier.

The need for this modification became evident during the international operation in Mali, which concluded in 2022. The large geographical area of Mali necessitated increased helicopter range, leading to the introduction and utilization of the extra fuel tank system on several Helicopter 16 units, Swedish defense ministry said in an official release.

"We have several helicopters that have already been modified and used the extra fuel tank with good results. Now we are finishing the work for the entire Helicopter 16 fleet. Additionally, the system is used by several other countries, including the United States. It is a great advantage for us to use their configuration as far as possible because the U.S. Army can then take responsibility for airworthiness and integration," Johnsson stated.

Upon completion of the modification, all Helicopter 16 units will be equipped with the capability to use the extra tank. This upgrade will enhance the operational flexibility and availability of the Swedish helicopter units.
