The Navy's PMA-281 and PMA-208 programs have teamed up with Shield AI to integrate AI into the  BQM-177A sub-sonic aerial target, advancing autonomous systems in naval aviation.

On August 16, the Navy awarded Shield AI the contract under an OTA agreement with the Naval Aviation Systems Consortium (NASC).

Capt. Jerick Black, PMA-281 program manager, Said "the collaboration with PMA-208 and Shield AI enhances validation, provides scalable solutions for naval aviation, and keeps the Navy at the cutting edge of technology and operational excellence."

Under the agreement, Shield AI will integrate its Hivemind AI pilot software and create a prototype test bed using the BQM-177.

“This configuration of the aerial target enables quick enhancements by continuously refining and updating AI algorithms with real-world feedback, ensuring the systems are robust, reliable, and ready for operational use,” said Johann Soto, the software modernization team lead at PMA-281.

“This testing approach seamlessly integrates simulation-based and live testing, creating a comprehensive and ongoing feedback loop that improves the effectiveness of the AI systems being developed,” Soto added. A technical demonstration is scheduled for late 2025.

The BQM-177A replicates modern subsonic anti-ship cruise missile threats in support of fleet training for both developmental and operational tests. It can support a variety of mission requirements by carrying a wide array of internal and external payloads.
