The Netherlands Ministry of Defense wants its Apache attack helicopters to go through a short-term modernization, State Secretary of Defence Jack de Vries wrote today in a letter to the Lower House of Parliament. The current Dutch Apaches, known as the Block I configuration, have some limitations compared to current standards. It is not possible to take pictures or video, nor to receive or send such documents. This is however possible with the latest configuration, known as Block II. A digital map display is another necessary improvement. In a map display, data are displayed in conjunction with tactical information on routes and the position of operational objectives and of friendly troops. Modernization will provide the Apaches with faster and better 'situational awareness.' This means that pilots will quickly view the ‘big picture’ of the area in which they are located. The upgrade involves an investment to the amount of EUR 116 million. By following onto an American program, the Netherlands will obtain short-term benefits, leading to a more favorable unit price. The first test aircraft will be ready in 2012 and the entire Apache fleet will follow in the period 2013 to 2015.
