The South Korean Ministry of Defense has taken down some 1300 Chinese-made CCTV cameras from military bases and on the border with the North after it was found that the cameras could transmit data to a server in China.
The cameras, supplied by a South Korean company, were found to be transmitting data to a server in China. This discovery was made during military equipment examinations in late July, local media reported.
Although no data leak has been reported, the military has taken precautionary measures and replaced the equipment with domestically made alternatives. Around 100 new cameras have already been installed.
The supplier is under investigation for allegedly falsifying the equipment's country of origin. Legal action is being considered against the company for this breach of trust.
The cameras were primarily used for monitoring military training grounds and base fences, not for border surveillance with North Korea. Despite this, the military has taken swift action to address potential security risks.
