Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has completed the design phase for six Type 212CD submarines, marking a key development in the joint German-Norwegian submarine program.

The "Critical Design Review" (CDR) confirms the design meets customer and TKMS requirements.

Germany and Norway are upgrading their fleets with the new Type 212CD submarines, replacing older Type 212A models. This modernization will enhance territorial security and deterrence capabilities. The new subs feature air-independent propulsion, allowing lengthy submerged operations, and stealth technology, including non-magnetic materials and reduced echo strength, making detection extremely difficult.

TKMS collaborated with German-Norwegian Joint Project Organization, Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency, and German procurement authority to review 100,000+ pages of documentation over three years.

Production will now intensify, with first tests scheduled for 2027 and delivery to the Norwegian Navy expected in 2029. Delivery of the two boats for the German Navy is scheduled for 2032 and 2034.

Germany and Norway are considering additional submarine orders, with decisions expected soon. Germany is set to receive two, while Norway will get four. Interestingly, the German manufacturer has confirmed they can ramp up production if more submarines are needed.

The Type 212CD submarine is a collaborative project between Germany and Norway. It measures approximately 73 meters in length, 10 meters in beam, and has a displacement of 2,500 tons.

The submarine features an air-independent propulsion system using fuel cells, allowing it to remain submerged for extended periods. Its design incorporates silent operation and non-magnetic construction, reducing its detectability.

The Type 212CD also includes the ORCCA combat system, developed by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Kongsberg, and Atlas Elektronik. This system provides enhanced situational awareness, combat management, and firepower capabilities.
