Northrop Grumman has launched the 30x113mm M230 Link Fed (M230LF) Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun, which allows operators to switch ammunition types quickly and includes different rounds for anti-drone and anti-armor operations.
The M230LF Dual Feed Chain Gun eliminates the need for mixed ammunition belts, allowing operators to switch between two types of ammunition on demand. A standard load for the system includes XM1211 proximity-fuzed rounds designed for counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) and XM1198 high-explosive, dual-purpose rounds for engaging armored targets.
Currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, the M230LF has reached a critical stage for development and is set for live-fire demonstrations in early 2025.
The dual feed feature enhances the chain gun's versatility, enabling operators to switch between ammunition types instantly, depending on the target. This design reduces the need for logistical adjustments and maximizes the weapon's effectiveness, minimizing the need for frequent reloads during engagements.
For operators familiar with the original M230LF, the new dual feed model maintains a similar weight profile and offers 60%-part commonality, making it easier to perform maintenance and repairs. Despite the introduction of this upgraded system, Northrop Grumman will continue to manufacture the single feed M230LF for customers who prefer the original configuration.
