KNDS France has demonstrated the long-range firing capabilities of its 155 mm CAESAR 8×8 self-propelled howitzer (SPH) during trials at the Ustka firing range in Poland.
Equipped with KNDS artillery ammunition, the CAESAR 8×8 fired beyond 42 km, according to an official statement from the company.
The tests, conducted in late September 2024, involved a series of shots using KNDS Ammo, demonstrating the effectiveness of the cannon and ammunition pairing for achieving enhanced range, precision, and terminal efficiency. KNDS has indicated that it views Poland as a crucial partner for future ammunition production, aiming to leverage the country’s established defense-industrial capabilities. The company is offering its knowledge in 155 mm shells, propellant, fuzes, and primers to assist in the development of local ammunition production.
Ukraine has used KNDS ammunition with 155 mm/52 caliber self-propelled howitzers, including the PzH 2000, K9 Thunder, and Archer systems.
The CAESAR 8×8, developed by Nexter Systems and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) features a 155 mm/L52 caliber cannon with an automatic loading system capable of a six-round-per-minute firing rate. The howitzer's fire control system and thermal camera allow for autonomous operation or coordination with an artillery command post.
It can fire various 155 mm ammunition types, including high-explosive, illuminating, smoke, and smart BONUS munitions, effectively meeting long-range needs with ranges up to 55 kilometers using VLAP (Velocity-enhanced Long-range Artillery Projectile) rounds. An armored cabin version is available for crew protection, providing adaptability across different military chassis. The CAESAR 8×8 has demonstrated capabilities in high-intensity scenarios and is widely used among NATO forces.
