European defense companies—Navantia (Spain), Fincantieri (Italy), Naval Group (France), and Naviris (France/Italy)—signed the Initial Consortium Agreement for the second phase of the Modular and Multirole Patrol Corvette (MMPC) Project during the Euronaval exhibition in Paris on November 5.
This agreement follows the European Commission’s selection in May 2024 of the consortium's proposal, originally submitted in November 2023.
The MMPC project, part of the European Defence Fund (EDF) and aligned with the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) framework, aims to enhance European defense capabilities. The second phase, which will receive up to €154.5 million in funding from the European Commission, involves the completion of corvette designs and the integration of innovative technologies to enable these vessels to perform a wider range of missions. This phase also marks the beginning of production for two prototype corvettes: one Long Range Multipurpose (LRM) version and one Full Combat Multipurpose (FCM) version.
The agreement also introduces Greece’s HYDRUS engineering company, which is expected to join the consortium. Co-financing from Spain, Italy, France, and Greece will support the project, reflecting the shared commitment to enhancing European naval capabilities and defense autonomy.
