Poland Advances Plans for Local Ammunition Production

A letter of intent was signed at the headquarters of Grupa Azoty in Tarnów on Monday, outlining plans to develop Poland’s capacity to produce explosives for ammunition.

The signing brought together representatives from Grupa Azoty, Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu, MESKO, and government officials, including the Minister of National Defense and the Minister of State Assets.

The agreement focuses on the production of nitrocellulose and multi-base powders, essential materials for ammunition manufacturing. Grupa Azoty, known for fertilizer production, will contribute to this initiative as part of its restructuring plan, which is expected to improve its financial condition and support its involvement in arms production.

Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, speaking at the event, stated, “Developing the capacity to produce nitrocellulose and multi-base powder is critical for the future production of ammunition in Poland.”

Plans for New Ammunition Factory

The Ministry of National Defense also announced plans to build an ammunition factory in Poland. The Council of Ministers is set to approve an act on November 19, allocating approximately PLN 3 billion (approximately $735 million) for the project.

“Poland is a large country and should be able to produce 155 mm ammunition on its own. Our goal is not just one factory, but more, as well as cooperation with partners from NATO and the EU to join forces. We are working to ensure that Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and MESKO can use these raw materials and develop the arms industry. The government will provide financing for this project - tomorrow we will present an act that provides for approximately PLN 3 billion (approximately $735 million) for the construction of an ammunition factory,” Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak said.

The factory will focus on producing 155 mm ammunition, with plans for additional facilities to expand production. The government also intends to collaborate with NATO and EU partners to support this effort.

The letter of intent and the planned legislation are part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of National Defense to strengthen Poland’s defense industry. This includes ensuring domestic production of key materials and fostering cooperation among state-owned enterprises, including PGZ and MESKO.
