An MQ-9 Reaper drone belonging to the U.S. Air Force has reportedly crashed in northern Syria, with experts indicating that technical malfunctions, rather than a weapon strike, were likely responsible for the failure.

The U.S. drone was reportedly conducting a reconnaissance mission over Syrian territory.

A video showing a crashed drone was posted on social media earlier today. The crash took place in a region controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The video, posted the night before the crash was confirmed, clearly shows the tail section of the drone, which resembles the MQ-9 Reaper, although no visible insignia was discernible. Observers suggest the drone's failure was likely due to technical malfunctions rather than a weapon strike.

The MQ-9 Reaper, a long-range reconnaissance and strike drone, is primarily used for surveillance and precision strikes. Developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, it has been in service since its first flight in 2001. The drone is powered by a Honeywell TP331-10 turboprop engine, capable of speeds over 400 km/h. It can reach altitudes up to 15,000 meters and stay airborne for up to 28 hours. The Reaper is equipped with various payload options, including high-precision weapons for target elimination.

The crash occurred amidst ongoing tensions in Syria, where opposition forces have made significant gains, challenging the government of President Bashar al-Assad, who receives support from Russia and Iran.

This incident follows a series of military activities in the region, including a massive Israeli airstrike on December 8, which targeted the Mezzeh airbase in Damascus. The strike caused considerable damage, including the destruction of several helicopters, after opposition forces seized control of the airbase.
