Saudi MoD Signs Contract with Spanish Navantia for three New Avante 2200 corvettes

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with the Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia for the supply of three new Avante 2200 corvettes.

These vessels will be identical to the ones already in service with the Royal Saudi Naval Force (RSNF).

The construction of the first corvette will begin later this year, with the final vessel scheduled for delivery in 2028.

Under the terms of the agreement, Navantia will deliver the first unit in Spain, while the second and third units will be completed in Saudi Arabia.

The Hazem Combat System, which will be integrated into these vessels, will be installed, tested, and finalized by SAMINavantia, following a process similar to the work carried out on the RSNF's fourth and fifth units.

In line with Saudi Arabia's vision to localize its shipbuilding capabilities, the contract includes a comprehensive training program for over 100 Saudi engineers. Furthermore, the third corvette will see the manufacturing of blocks in Saudi Arabia. Navantia will also transfer the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for the Avante 2200 design to the Saudi General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI).

The contract also includes an integrated logistical support package, crew training, and operational training at the Spanish Navy's Rota naval base. The Spanish Navy will support the Royal Saudi Naval Force during these training sessions, ensuring the operational readiness of the vessels.

Avante 2200 Model Features

The Avante 2200 corvettes are multipurpose vessels designed for various naval operations, including patrolling the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), maritime traffic surveillance, search and rescue missions, and offering assistance to other vessels. These vessels will be equipped with advanced defense capabilities, including anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, anti-surface, and electronic warfare systems.
