The Australian Air Force today announced receiving seven F-35 Lightning II jets, the first to be equipped with Technology Refresh 3 which makes them eligible for Block 4 upgrades and the last of its 72 aircraft order.

The “TR-3” upgrade will increase processing power 37 times and memory 20 times over the F-35’s current capabilities.

TR-3 is necessary before the F-35 can receive a more expansive modernization known as Block 4, which will allow it to carry more long-range precision weapons, improve its electronic warfare capability and provide better target recognition.

The aircraft, now stationed at RAAF Base Williamtown in New South Wales, represent the final nine jets in Australia’s fleet of 72 F-35A fighters. These jets, along with the EA-18G Growler and F/A-18F Super Hornets, are key components of the nation's air defense and strike capabilities. This development aligns with the goals outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy.

The F-35A’s multi-role capabilities allow it to perform both air-to-air and air-to-surface missions. Its integration of stealth technology, electronic protection, and countermeasures enhances its effectiveness and survivability in combat. The delivery of these final aircraft highlights the progress made since the first two F-35A jets arrived in Australia in December 2018.

Over 75 Australian companies have contributed to the production, sustainment, and development of the F-35A, receiving more than $4.8 billion in contracts.
