Thales launched the SEACURE project as part of the European Defence Fund (EDF) in November, aiming to strengthen Europe’s sovereign capabilities in anti-submarine warfare and seabed operations.
The initiative, which will run for 45 months, involves 35 partners from thirteen European Union Member States the company announced on December 19.
Building on the success of the SEANICE project, which concluded in 2023 under the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP), SEACURE focuses on ensuring Europe’s independence in defending its maritime borders. The project is designed to enhance the detection, classification, and tracking of underwater threats, including anti-submarine and autonomous seabed warfare, using drones deployed in aerial, surface, and underwater operations.
The growing global security challenges, including maritime tensions near the EU, Middle East, and Far East, underscore the need to protect critical maritime infrastructure. In response, SEACURE is developing an integrated system of systems capable of autonomous joint operations.
By 2028, the project aims to demonstrate a system with high autonomy, based on an open, modular, and scalable architecture.
