The Pentagon has compiled a list of images for deletion due to the word "gay" in their filenames, including photos of service members with the last name Gay and the B-29 Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima during World War II.
According to the Associated Press, the photos were flagged solely because the word "gay" appeared in the file name. The Enola Gay bomber was named after the pilot's mother, and the Pentagon’s database reportedly includes images unrelated to gender or sexual identity.
The total number of deleted images could reach 100,000, with 26,000 already removed. While most images relate to women and minorities, the database also includes references to Black and Latino individuals.
The removals follow executive orders signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which restricted federal inclusion and diversity programs and recognized only two genders—male and female.
