The Ukrainian Air Force has begun using F-16 fighter jets to strike Russian ground targets, deploying high-precision guided bombs such as the Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) and the JDAM-ER.
A newly released interview with a Ukrainian F-16 pilot, first of its kind, highlighted the aircraft’s role in combat missions, the tactics employed, and the team’s adaptation to Western technology. The Air Force stated that pilots operating these fighters have demonstrated effectiveness against both air and ground targets.
Recent images of a Ukrainian F-16 showed BRU-61 pylons mounted at two points, each carrying four GBU-39/B SDB bombs. This U.S.-made guided bomb weighs 130 kg, has a flight range of up to 110 km when released from high altitudes, and is designed for precision strikes. “If we want, our bomb can fly into someone’s window,” the pilot said, emphasizing its accuracy.
To maximize effectiveness, Ukrainian pilots must operate close to enemy positions, exposing them to threats from Russian aircraft and ground-based air defenses. The F-16s are also armed with AIM-120C, AIM-9M, and AIM-9X air-to-air missiles for aerial engagements.
Ukraine recently received additional F-16s through international military assistance. In a separate development, France is expected to supply Ukraine with additional Mirage fighters and MICA missiles.
