Airbus to Build Key Systems for ExoMars Lander for Europe’s Mars Mission

Airbus has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Thales Alenia Space (TAS) to develop critical systems for the ExoMars lander, which will deliver the Rosalind Franklin rover to the Martian surface.

TAS, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), serves as the industrial prime contractor for the mission.

Airbus will provide the landing platform that ensures a safe touchdown and enables the rover’s deployment. The system will be responsible for slowing the lander from 45 meters per second at the end of parachute descent to less than 3 meters per second using retro rockets. The lander will also feature two ramps positioned on opposite sides, allowing the rover to reach the Martian surface via the safest route.

Airbus teams in Stevenage will design the mechanical, thermal, and propulsion systems required for the lander. The propulsion system will provide the final braking thrust, and the landing gear will ensure stability upon touchdown. Airbus has experience developing over 120 propulsion systems for more than 90 spacecraft, covering telecommunications, Earth observation, and scientific missions.

The Rosalind Franklin rover, built by Airbus, was originally set to launch in 2022 but was delayed due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Airbus is now working with TAS, ESA, and NASA to upgrade various components, including integrating NASA’s Radioisotope Heater Units (RHUs) to maintain the rover’s temperature on Mars. A new software mode will also allow the rover to quickly transition into an autonomous state after landing.

The ExoMars mission is set for launch in 2028 aboard a NASA-supplied rocket, with the rover scheduled to land in 2030, avoiding Mars’ global dust season.
