The U.S. State Department has approved two Foreign Military Sales to Ukraine totaling $330 million, covering the overhaul of M109 self-propelled howitzers and the sustainment of U.S.-origin air defense systems, according to notifications sent to Congress.
The first package, estimated at $150 million, includes equipment and services for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of M109 howitzers. It also covers technical assistance, training, publications, logistics, and program support.
The MRO capability is expected to raise operational readiness while reducing logistical and financial strain. Ukraine is expected to easily integrate the support into its forces.
The second package, worth $180 million, focuses on air defense sustainment. It includes equipment and services for training, maintenance, modifications, spare parts, consumables, repair and return support, as well as U.S. government and contractor logistics and engineering assistance.
The sale aims to improve Ukraine’s air defense capability, allowing it to counter current and future threats more effectively.
Principal contractors for the M109 overhaul include BAE Systems, Daimler Truck North America, and Allison Transmission Inc., with work to be done in Europe. For air defense support, contractors include Sierra Nevada Corporation, V2X Inc., and Kyiv-based Radionix and Systems Electronic Export. No offset agreements have been proposed at this stage.
The approvals follow a separate $322 million package cleared on July 23 for HAWK Phase III air defense systems and Bradley fighting vehicles, along with their maintenance.
Meanwhile, U.S. Deputy State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott reiterated support for a complete and unconditional ceasefire, including a halt to strikes on civilians and infrastructure. He said the U.S. continues to encourage direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to reach a comprehensive peace.
Pigott welcomed reports of a new prisoner exchange involving seriously ill or wounded personnel.
