While speaking to the House of Commons today, Prime Minister David Cameron has
announced that the MOD is set to order an additional C-17 Globemaster, thus increasing the
total number in the RAF's fleet to eight. Citing better finances and savings as the reason for the addition, "This aircraft is becoming
an absolutely brilliant workhorse for the RAF in terms of bringing men and material into a
war zone like Afghanistan, but also evacuating civilians in times of need,” he said. The latest acquisition, is currently being built by Boeing in the U.S., will cost £200m and is
due to come off the production line next month. It is then expected to enter service with
the RAF in July 2012 when it will help support the airbridge which transports Armed Forces
personnel and equipment between the UK and Afghanistan.
