After the success of the indigenous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Rustom I,
India will develop its successor the Rustom II which it hopes to
flight test by 2014. The announcement was made by PS Krishnan, Director of the Aeronautical
Development Establishment (ADE) during the International Conference on
Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles 2012 in Bangalore, the tech hub of
India. He said the ADE was looking for public sector partnerships to power
the project. “The Army and Navy have already seen and approved it. The
new Rustom will be really economical, and it will have a variety of
new features,” said Krishnan. The Rustom II will be solar powered, according to Krishnan who refused
to divulge details. The ADE has currently invested some Rs. 80 crores on developing solar
powered UAVS including aircraft that run on diesel engines.
