Israel, Azerbaijan Ink $1.6 Billion Weapons Deal

Azerbaijan has entered into a $1.6 billion weapons deal with Israel making it the country’s largest single arms purchase which include drones, anti-aircraft and missile defense systems, according to Israeli news reports. The Israel Aerospace Industries first announced the contract in January 2012 without disclosing the identity of the customer. The arms package included in the two contracts include the Green Pine missile defense radar, which also provides the main sensor for the Israeli Arrow missile defense system, various air defense radars and missile systems, as well as ship-launched missiles, supporting the small Azeri Caspian Navy vessels which consists mostly with fast patrol boats, with more powerful firepower. Israeli defense officials confirmed the deal on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
