The Israeli Defense Forces has obtained its fourth German-made Dolphin class submarine capable of carrying nuclear weapons on Thursday. Named Tanin after the Hebrew word for alligator, the new submarine is due to enter service in 2013 once the tests are completed. "The Navy and the submarine fleet constitute a deterrent, protective and strategic arm for the IDF and for the State of Israel," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said during the handing iver ceremony in Kiel, Germany. The estimated construction costs are at $530 million, said to be one of Israel’s most expensive defense contracts, one-third was subsidized by the German government. Earlier this year, Israel and Germany signed a deal worth $400 million to build a sixth submarine due to be completed in 2017. While the fifth submarine, due to enter service in 2014, is in the final stages of construction.
