The Russian Mil Mi-28N, the newest attack helicopter in the Army, crashed on Thursday morning at its base in Mozdok, North Ossetia. According to preliminary reports, no one including the two-man crew was injured. "An Mi-28N made a heavy landing while on a training flight," a defense official was quoted as saying. "The crew was not hurt and neither was anyone on the ground. The cause is being investigated". In a similar incident in 2011, the Mi-28 crashed injuring the crew after a gearbox failure. And, in 2009, another chopper went down after it suffered engine failure after ingesting gases from rockets it was firing at low-level on a range. The Mi-28N is similar to the AH-64 Apache and is an all-weather radar-equipped helicopter gunship, designed for attacking armored vehicles.
