Huntington Ingalls Industries To Modify Nuclear-Powered CVN 79 Aircraft Carrier

Huntington Ingalls Industries received a previous contract modification for material procurement & advanced construction of John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) aircraft carrier. The contract includes continuation of long-lead-time material procurement for advance construction of the nuclear-powered CVN 79, research studies, engineering, design, related development efforts, advanced planning, advanced procurement for detail design and procurement of long lead material and logistics data. The contract amount is $296 million and scheduled for delivery to the Navy is after 2022. The company's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the prime contractor. Mike Shawcross, NNS Newport News Ship building vice president, John F. Kennedy construction, said, “Advance construction and procurement enables us to transition smoothly from Ford into the bulk of Kennedy's construction starting in 2013. We are always looking at ways to improve carrier construction at the shipyard from changes in how work flows through the yard to engaging our suppliers for their ideas that could improve efficiency."
