India has successfully test-fired a 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from its latest frigate, the INS Tarkash, off the coast of Goa.

The submarine-launched version of the missile was successfully tested under-water just two months ago.

"The launch was carried out by the Navy as part of Acceptance Test Firing (ATF) of the ship," BrahMos Aerospace chief, Sivathanu Pillai was quoted as saying.

The missile performed the high-level 'C' manoeuvre in the pre-determined flight path and successfully hit the target having the flying at a speed of Mach 2.8.

BrahMos officials ensured the enhancement of the stealth capabilities of the ship with the vertical launch configuration of the supersonic missile and it being under the deck and not exposed.

The Army will be inducting three versions of the multi-role BrahMos, having already placed orders worth Rs 9,484 crore, over the next two-three years.

Both the Navy and IAF have also ordered BrahMos missiles worth Rs 3,568 crore and Rs 1,295 crore.
