The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy commissioned its Type 055 guided missile destroyer in January 2020. The ‘Nanchang’ is the PLA Navy’s biggest battleship and the spearhead of its blue water ambitions. China plans to use the ship for muscle-flexing in the Straits of Taiwan and for force projection in the South China Sea which it claims against international maritime laws and agreements.

It will almost run head to head against American vessels such as the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and the Ticonderoga-class cruisers which are seen in waters contested by China under the guise of ‘Freedom of Navigation.’

Defenseworld.net looks at the relative strengths of the Chinese and American vessels and what one will be up against the other in terms of weapons, radars and ship-borne helicopters.
