The Malaysian Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) has appointed Weststar Group as the main contractor for the procurement of StarStreak Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) system from Thales, Weststar said in a statement today.

Malaysia had signed an agreement with Global Komited, a subsidiary of Weststar Group and Thales during DSA 2014 to market Starstreak system to Malaysian Armed Forces to replace Thales’ Starbust V-Shorads which has been in use with air defense of the military bases.

Malaysia on July 30, signed a deal for procurement of Starstreak V-Shorads, GM-K1 vehicles and light weight multiple launchers, radars and command and control systems from UK.

MINDEF is delighted with the procurement of the system, as it will be a key part of augmenting the capabilities of the nation¹s air defense forces as a whole. The system is being procured in part of a trade-in program of the decommissioned Starburst missiles. The delivery of the integrated air defense system will come in a complete package that includes air surveillance/engagement radar as well as a command and control system.
