UK is considering the upgrade of its 50 older model Apache helicopters by Boeing and other US companies for about US$3 billion.

The possible sale also includes General Electric T700 engines and a variety of acquisition sights, sensors and radar equipment, the Pentagon announced Thursday.

Britain would use the Apache helicopters to conduct various missions, including counter-terrorism and counter-piracy operations.

Lockheed Martin Corp is another key supplier on the programme.

The Boeing AH-64 Apache is a four-blade, twin-turboshaft attack helicopter with a tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement, and a tandem cockpit for a two-man crew.

The Helicopter features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems.
