South Korea will dispatch additional military engineers to conflict zones to beef up UN peacekeeping operations.
"They will be assisting reconstruction and humanitarian activities in conflict zones," South Korean President Park Geun-hye said in the leader's summit on peacekeeping at the UN that was co-chaired by US President Barack Obama and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The size and specifics regarding the countries to which South Korea will dispatch troops was not disclosed by the President. About 630 South Korean soldiers are stationed in conflict zones in South Sudan and Lebanon, Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday.
South Korea plans to provide hospital equipment via African Union to enhance peacekeeping in Africa and plans to scale up its financial contributions to support the UN’s conflict prevention and peace-building initiatives, Park said.
