Russia has deployed Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile to Syria to defend its Latakia airbase from possible terrorist ground and air attacks.
Russia has also sent anti-aircraft artillery systems and Buk-M2E medium-range anti-aircraft systems to Syria.
“A joint air defense system has been established in Syria with Russia's participation, which protects all military and strategically important civilian sites,” a military-diplomatic official said.
The joint air defense system in Syria also includes modernized Osa, S-125 Pechora-2M, S-200, and other systems, Interfax-AVN news agency was quoted as reported by Russia Beyond The Headlines Thursday.
"The combination of these weapons guarantees the defense of a protected facility from air attacks as well as missile strikes.
This system has been built similar to Israel's Iron Dome," he said in commenting on Russian Aerospace Forces Commander Col. Gen. Viktor Bondarev's statement that Russia had shipped air defense systems to Syria.
