Rheinmetall has won a 390 million euro contract to modernize its Skyguard air defense systems from an international customer.
The modernization program consists of equipping the missile/gun air defence systems with advanced radar technology. The customer country’s air defence corps will thus have at its disposal the most advanced version of the tried-and-tested Skyguard system, which is designed to engage aerial targets at medium to very short ranges, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
Delivery will take place between 2017 and 2020.
Besides a new search radar, the Skyguard systems will be outfitted (among other things) with a new target tracking radar, a latest-generation friend-foe identification system as well as cutting-edge electronic warfare components. The missile launcher will be upgraded with a new electronic pod, which will enhance the system’s missile capability. Furthermore, logistical support will also be improved.
